Signs You Need Plumbing — What to Look For and What to Do Next

Signs you need plumbing — fast checks and next steps
Plumbing faults rarely fix themselves. Spotting the signs early saves water, avoids damage and keeps your home safe. This guide covers the common symptoms that mean you need plumbing help, simple actions you can take immediately, and when to call a qualified engineer in Cramlington, Northumberland or around Tyneside.
Aqua Solutions Plumbing & Heating has over 20 years’ experience, Gas Safe registered engineers and Baxi Approved installation credentials — so you’ll get safe, compliant work when you need it.
1. Persistent drips or leaking pipes
What you’ll see: constant dripping from a tap, a hidden leak beneath a sink, or damp patches and peeling paint on walls or ceilings.
Immediate actions:
- Turn off the isolating valve to the fixture. If the leak is inside a wall, close the mains stopcock.
- Contain the water with a bucket and towels to limit damage.
- Photograph the leak and note times it gets worse — useful for a diagnosis.
Why call a pro: hidden leaks can rot joists, damage plaster and encourage mould. A qualified plumber will locate the source (pipe joint, compression fitting, or corrosion) and repair or replace the affected section.
2. Low or fluctuating water pressure
What you’ll see: weak shower spray, slow-filling taps or pressure that drops when other fixtures are used.
Immediate actions:
- Check the inlet filter on showers and taps for debris — cleaning can restore pressure.
- Run a cold tap to see if pressure improves; if not, check the stopcock is fully open.
Why call a pro: pressure issues can come from pipe scale, a failing pump, a leaking pipe or shared supply issues. In older properties in Northumberland, limescale build-up in alloy or copper pipework is common and needs the right treatment.
3. Discoloured or cloudy water
What you’ll see: brown, yellow or cloudy water from taps, especially after work on the supply or if you have older iron pipes.
Immediate actions:
- Run taps for a few minutes — sediment is sometimes flushed out.
- Avoid using discoloured hot water for washing until it clears.
Why call a pro: persistent discolouration can indicate internal corrosion or contamination. A plumber will trace the issue and advise on replacing affected pipework or fitting suitable filters.
4. No hot water or boiler faults
What you’ll see: no hot water, boiler locking out, pilot light issues, or unusual noises from the boiler.
Immediate actions:
- Check the boiler pressure gauge — if it’s low, top up to the correct pressure following the boiler manual.
- Try a simple reset if your boiler manual allows; do not attempt internal repairs.
- If you smell gas, leave the property immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Why call a pro: all gas work must be completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Aqua Solutions’ engineers are Gas Safe registered and Baxi Approved, so we can diagnose faults, complete safe repairs and, where needed, arrange a replacement installation compliant with current regs.
5. Cold spots on radiators or banging pipes
What you’ll see: radiators warm at the bottom but cold at the top, or noisy expansion knocks and hammering in pipework.
Immediate actions:
- Bleed radiators using a bleed key to remove trapped air. Have a cloth and bowl ready for water.
- Check the heating system pressure and top up if the manual instructs.
Why call a pro: persistent cold spots or noisy pipes can indicate a failing pump, system sludge or poor pipework layout. A heating engineer can power-flush a system, fit magnetic filters and balance radiators for efficient heat distribution.
6. Sudden rise in water bills or damp patches
What you’ll see: an unexplained increase in consumption, damp baseboards or pools in your garden.
Immediate actions:
- Turn off all appliances and check the meter to see if it’s still moving — this can confirm a hidden leak.
- Inspect common leak points: toilet cisterns, outside taps, and under sinks.
Why call a pro: the source may be underground or in concealed pipework. Locating and repairing buried pipe leaks quickly prevents structural damage.
What to bring when you call a plumber
- Photos or short videos of the problem and any visible pipework.
- Details of your boiler make/model and any error codes.
- Notes on when the issue started and any recent work to the property.
At Aqua Solutions, Martin (Engineer) will use that information to advise whether it’s an emergency repair or a scheduled visit. We offer free, no-obligation quotes and are fully insured (Simply Business) with BPEC accreditation for unvented systems.
When it’s an emergency
- Smell gas: evacuate, don’t use electrical switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
- Major flooding: isolate the mains stopcock, turn off electrics at the fuseboard if safe, and call a plumber immediately.
